Changing the lives of Students
Leeds Community Foundation are very proud to support Leeds Beckett University with their Bright Futures Scholarship, the University tells us more…
In a nutshell, could you tell us what your Leeds Community Foundation funded project involves?
The support from Leeds Community Foundation has helped us to change the lives of young people through an education at Leeds Beckett University. We have awarded five Bright Futures Scholarships to people wanting to study here who come from difficult financial backgrounds to enable them to remain at university.
Why is this kind of support so vital, what’s the need andwhat might be the situation if the support you offer didn’t exist?
An increasing number of our students come from under-represented groups and low-income backgrounds. These students are more likely to struggle at university and less likely to excel in their studies. The scholarships that support these students can make a life-changing difference, allowing them to excel and remain at university and achieve their dreams.
Could you share a rewarding moment you’ve had so far? Is there a particular story you could share from a beneficiary you’ve helped?
Among the students the grant enabled us to support was a student studying primary education who combines her studies with working as many part-time hours as possible and travelling home to help care for her sister who is living with autism.
What made you apply for a Foundation grant, what difference has the funding from the Foundation made
We applied for the grant from Leeds Community Foundation simply because we recognised that there was more that we could do to support these young people. In the last year for every scholarship that we were able to award, there were a further 13 applications from students who were eligible.
