“At the time I was in a very lonely place. I was struggling with my mental health. I’d go home after work and not have much to do. I realised I needed to occupy my time, and my mind. I had to push myself and try new things. One of my friends recommended dancing to me. I thought dancing, Salsa – not me! I didn’t dance, I couldn’t dance but I ended up really enjoying it. From that point I started looking for other things to do in the evenings. I tried so many different dance styles and then someone told me about the VYBZ class.
VYBZ is my favourite class of the week. A lot of classes can take themselves too seriously. All the steps have to be right and it sucks the fun out of it, not at VYBZ. We are taught the steps but it doesn’t matter if you can’t do it perfectly. Everyone just has a good time. I haven’t missed any sessions since starting. Having classes like these are vital, it’s a place where people can go and join in something. So what started as an escape for me, is still an escape. But it’s so much more than that.”
VYBZ is a Leeds based Dance Company. Support from Leeds Community Foundation meant they were able to deliver the ‘Power of Urban Dance’ project, which uses the art of dance to promote positive mental health and wellbeing.
