“I was out of work and suffering from a lot of mental health issues. I struggled to get out of the house. Chapel FM is very close to where I live so it was easy for me to get here and leave if I needed to. I started an arts award, I had little musical experience: I played the guitar maybe twice in my life, but I got stuck in and finished my award using the facilities here. I learnt all about radio, music and all the technical aspects that go with it.
One of the most inspiring projects I have been involved in has been the 24hr musicathon. We invited the Leeds music community to come and perform over the course of a day. It’ll be our tenth year next year and a great project to be involved in. I do a lot of the technical set-up for the late evening slot. I’d have never thought this role was for me, let alone be doing it at this level.”
Chapel FM is a community arts organisation based in Seacroft that inspires individuals and communities to improve potential and achievement. With support from Leeds Community Foundation they were able to give young people the opportunity to produce their own radio show talking about issues and topics relevant to them, such as mental health, healthy living and identity.
