The High Sheriff Fund

In 2016/17 Chris Brown OBE DL established the High Sheriff of West Yorkshire Fund in partnership with Leeds Community Foundation to help young people to combat crime and create safer communities.

Chris Brown OBE DL, Founder of the Fund, said;

“I established the High Sheriff of West Yorkshire Fund to give young people a voice and help shape solutions for how we prevent crime in our local communities. Utilising Leeds Community Foundation’s trusted expertise and knowledge, the Fund distributes grants each year to a range of projects which transform young people’s lives, whilst informing future generations of the tradition and role of the shrievalty. I hope others will continue to join me in supporting this fantastic initiative.”

Thanks to support from former High Sheriffs, the West Yorkshire Police and other donors, the Fund has now distributed over £76,500 to 28 fantastic community projects across the region delivering a range of youth-led activity including youth engagement with the police, awareness of domestic violence and a focus of reducing anti-social behaviour. Projects like…

  • The School of Rock & Media, who are delivering a youth-led music, drama and film project exploring stories of young victims of crimes such as cyber bullying, child sexual abuse, and sexual grooming.
  • Deighton into Sport Project, who will be running aMidnight Soccer Club which utilises local coaches and volunteers who can be good role models for young people in Huddersfield, providing them with the tools to grow in confidence and to be aware of local issues, as well as teaching them how they can play a part in reducing anti-social behaviour.
  • Bangla Square Youth Project, who will be supporting young people to integrate into British Society by helping with their studies at school, reducing isolation and giving opportunities to try new activities.

We want to be able to support more fantastic projects and are call on people to join us to support the work of this fantastic Fund to ensure more young people and projects can be supported across the region now and in the future.

Leeds Community Foundation is responsible for raising 100% of our core costs. Accordingly, we need to ensure that we cover all our overheads including the costs of governance and of advising and administering any funds. We take a management contribution on all funds managed by the Foundation which is re-invested in staff time to run our efficient and effective grant programmes, conduct full due diligence, and provide practical support and advice to local community projects.
